Jedediah Smith State Park pictures

This is a picture taken of me on the Hiouchi trail in Jedediah Smith State Park.  There are several trailheads where this hike begins.  If you are heading north on Highway 199 from Crescent City, pull into the turn-out on the right side of the road before the Hiouchi Bridge.  

This hike gives you spectacular views of the Redwoods, the Smith River, many varieties of flora and fauna, and in the spring, spectacular rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom.  Approximately a half mile into the hike, there is a bench overlooking the river where we stood to take the picture below and rest a bit.

The Hiouchi Trail hike is for a novice to average hiker (that's what I am).  We hiked in about an hour and then back out one afternoon after work. 

There are trailheads similar to this one all over the 199 corridor between Crescent City and Hiouchi, the little town that is home to Jedediah Smith State Park.

If you haven't been to the Smith River to fish, swim, kayak, canoe, or raft, you are missing out.  The Smith River is the only undammed river in Northern California and is a recreation lover's delight.

Castle Rock National Wildlife Refuge

This stretch of the California Coastline is worth the drive.  Please read about the sanctuary at the link above.  A few 100 feet south from this spot is a popular surfing location for local surfers.  The day I took this picture, the beach was sparsely populated with people enjoying the surf and sunshine, collecting agates, driftwood, shells, walking their dogs, and in my case, sitting and enjoying the view. 

Pebble Beach Drive borders this stretch of ocean with many turnouts for easy parking and access.

A rare snow fall dusted Crescent City shortly after sunrise today, making for a number of beautiful scenes, including this one caught by city resident Dawn Messer at Pebble Beach.

A dusting of snow greeted Crescent City residents shortly after dawn today. Most of the snow evaporated within an hour as temperatures rose about freezing. Less than an inch accumulated, the National Weather Service in Eureka reported.

With the snowfall so light, no weather-related accidents were reported in the area. Snow had fallen at elevations above 500 feet Wednesday, including at Vista Point south of the city. Cold temperatures through the night, however, caused what normally would be winter rain to freeze and fall as snow at elevations below 500 feet along the shoreline.

The dusting marked the first snowfall in Crescent City since March. The weather service predicts a "slight chance" of snow again in Crescent City this evening. Lows are expected to be in the 20s with a possibility of rain. The weather service has issued a frost advisory for the shoreline.  While temperatures will remain cool and fall below freezing through the weekend, snow is unlikely. Clear skies with possible fog patches are forecast through Sunday.

My name if Fran Gatti and I live and work in Del Norte County, California.  Del Norte (pronounced Del Nort) is the Northern-most California County that borders the Pacific Ocean.  We are home to Redwood National and State Parks, the Smith River, the Klamath River (both are premier Steehead fishing rivers) and miles of unadulterated beaches where you can be the only person walking for miles. 

Our temperatures are mild in Crescent City, which borders the ocean, but can get into the 100's inland in the summer.  Del Norte gets a lot of rain, but that keeps our county lush and green.  The Star Wars movie with the actors riding on flying motorcycles was filmed in our old-growth Redwood forest.  Our county is small in comparison to most California counties, at least population wise, with 30,000 people living in the entire county. 

Our housing market is still seeing a brisk pace in sales due to our relatively bargain prices (median home price in December was $280,000) for California.  Soon-to-retire baby boomers like our prices, but are also attracted to the beauty of the area, our mild weather and our LACK OF TRAFFIC!
